Poezie anonima

Se spune ca ar fi fost scrisa de un soldat din armata confederata (a sudului), in timpul razboiului civil din SUA (1861-1865).
Ei sunt foarte constienti ca fiecare zi este un dar de la Dumnezeu.

I asked for riches, that I might be happy. I was given poverty, that I might be wise ...
I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men. I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God ...
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life. I was given life that I might enjoy all things ...
I got nothing that I asked for-but everything I had hoped for. Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered. I am, among all men, most richly blessed."

Am cerut putere, ca sa dobandesc lauda oamenilor. Mi s-a dat slabiciune, ca sa pot sa simt nevoia de Dumnezeu...
Am cerut toate lucrurile, ca sa pot sa ma bucur de viata. Mi s-a dat viata, ca sa ma pot bucura de toate lucrurile...
Nu am primit nimic din ceea ce am cerut - dar am primit tot ceea ce am sperat. Aproape fara voia mea, rugaciunile mele nespuse au primit un raspuns. Eu sunt, intre toti oamenii, pe deplin, cel mai binecuvantat. "
